WhatsApp needs no real introduction. It's now the world's most popular instant messaging service, and we love it to pieces. As a show of appreciation for WhatsApp and the joy it brings into our lives, we've decided to compile a comprehensive list of WhatsApp tips and tricks to help AndroidPIT readers get the most out of the app. Here are our answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about WhatsApp.
Basic functions
How can I listen to WhatsApp messages discreetly?
Voice messages are played through the main speakers on your smartphone, and will usually allow all of your nearest and dearest to listen in as well. There is a deceptively simple solution for this issue: just hold the phone to your ear. The proximity sensor will think it is a standard phone call and will automatically switch speakers.
How do I cancel a WhatsApp voice message?
When you send a voice message via WhatsApp you need to hold the record button. As soon as you stop pressing the button, the message will be sent. That said, you are still able to cancel these messages. Just slide your finger to the left of the input field and a small trash can will appear. This indicates that your message has been deleted.
If you are a heavy WhatsApp user you'll be writing and receiving a lot of messages. For one reason or another, you may want to have some of these messages more readily available than others. Go to the conversation and press down on the message you want to bookmark, all you need to do then is press on the star in the new menu at the top.
To access your favorite messages, go to the main window and click on the three vertical dots. Then enter the "Starred Messages" tab and you will find your favorites there.
How do I find individual contacts or messages in WhatsApp?
Do you need to find the details for one of your contacts but hate to scroll through everyone else to find them? No problem! Just click on the magnifying glass and type the name of the person you are looking for.
Searching is not limited to finding your contacts. If you have had a long conversation with a contact and you want to find a specific message, you can easily access it. Go to the conversation and click on the three vertical dots in the top menu, click on search and then just enter your key search words.
Just follow the same procedure as above to find your contact, except this time you will need to press on the paperclip and choose "Document." You can then access your memory, select the file you want and send.
How do I send my location or a contact number via WhatsApp?
In some circumstances, you may need to send your exact location or send the phone number of another contact. All you need to do is go to the chat window for your contact, and then click on the top right paperclip. In the menu select "Location" (obviously) and you will be given multiple options. Select the option which best fits where your current location is, and it will be sent to your contact.
To send a contact, simply select "Contact" on the same menu, pick one from the contacts list and confirm with the arrow.
How can I be sure I have the latest version of WhatsApp?
As a general rule, the Play Store will notify you when your apps can be updated. Of course, you are able to check whether a new version is available by visiting the Play Store, click on "my apps" and you will be able to see if any updates are available. If you don't want to wait for the update to become available in the Play Store, you can always go to the APK file and install it manually.
If you'd like to see what's new in WhatsApp, we recommend you wait for a WhatsApp beta to become available.
How do I install the latest WhatsApp APK?
First, head to Settings > Security > Unknown sources and ensure the box is checked.
Then, on your smartphone browser either head to the WhatsApp website or APK Mirror and download the latest APK (APK Mirror is usually ahead of the WhatsApp website). Once the file has downloaded, open it to install the latest WhatsApp APK.
How can I participate in WhatsApp beta?
Like many apps, Facebook / WhatsApp offers its users the opportunity to test new features in a pre-release version. Once you're all signed up you can install the beta version of WhatsApp from the Play Store.
How can I send messages via WhatsApp with Google Now?
If for whatever reason are unable to use your hands, you should know that you can go through Google Now to send messages via WhatsApp entirely by speech interface.
Simply start it manually or say "Okay Google" (if you have it voice enabled), and then say "Send to #message #contact on WhatsApp." For example, "send Cuckoo Carole on WhatsApp." The application will then ask you to confirm, so you can either press the arrow or confirm vocally.
How do I make an audio or video call using WhatsApp?
Nothing could be easier! On the conversation window you will find in the top right the symbol of a phone next to the paperclip. Press it, and the application will ask if you want to make an audio or video call. Just select your preferred function and the call will start.
How do I change my WhatsApp status?
Simply click on the three vertical dots in the upper right. On the menu, click "Status." All you need to do is press on the pen at the end of your current status and you edit it to your liking. Alternatively, you can also select the default statuses that are already available.
How do I delete photos and videos sent via WhatsApp?
WhatsApp can be annoying sometimes because every time you send a picture or a video, it is saved to your phone. For instance, if you took a photo in town today and then sent it to a friend, that photo will be stuck not only in your photo file but also in your WhatsApp conversation.
You can delete these manually. Just go to the WhatsApp folder in your phone's internal memory to the media file and select what you want to delete, and then go to the "Sent" folder and select the items you want to delete.
How can I disable automatic loading of multimedia files on WhatsApp?
When you receive a lot of images via WhatsApp you do not always want them to be downloaded by default. This isn't only because they are not that interesting, downloading them consumes a lot of data. Fear not, you can disable the annoying automatic download. Instead, you will then need to validate the download manually.
Go to the settings and then enter "Data Usage". You can then choose which items can be downloaded automatically with mobile data, WiFi or roaming. Simply click on the configuration that you want, for example "using mobile data", and then select your preferred options - you can ignore the ones you don't want.
If nothing needs to be downloaded automatically, simply turn off all of the available options.
It's actually very simple. Open the conversation with the contact, press the "Menu" key and select "Block." If you decide its time to start talking again, you can find your list of blocked contacts in Settings > My Account > Privacy.
Since WhatsApp version 2.1.23 was introduced it has been possible to block and report users if you receive messages you don't like or they are spamming you. You'll be offered this option every time, unless the contact is already in your address book.
How do I stop someone from calling or messaging me on WhatsApp?
If you do not want to receive calls from certain contacts, you can simply block them. To do this, go to the WhatsApp Settings, select "My Account" adn then "Privacy". You will find "Blocked", and the procedure for blocking contacts will be outlined in there. In the new window, click on the small icon at the top right and choose the contacts to block.
How do I know if someone has blocked me on WhatsApp?
There are four ways to suss whether someone has blocked you on WhatsApp. Each sign is largely meaningless by itself, but together they form a solid reason to believe that your friend doesn't want to be your friend.
Take note that WhatsApp has deliberately made it difficult to tell whether someone has blocked you or not, in order to maintain users' privacy. There's always an outlying chance that you're just being paranoid, even when all four of the below points apply.
Check the 'last seen' time
A contact's 'last seen' time appears in the top bar right under their name. If there's no information about when they were last online, this could be a bad sign. It doesn't necessarily mean that they've blocked you – it is possible to stop this information appearing without blocking someone. Your friend might just value their privacy, so don't go burning bridges just yet. Read on.
Check marks are WhatsApp's way of compounding your obsessive streak by ensuring that you know what's going on on the other end of the line.
The first check mark means that your message has been sent. When the second one appears, your message has been received by the recipient's phone. This doesn’t mean that the person has read your message, just that it is on their phone; when those check marks turn blue, that's when they have seen the message. If you see the check marks turn blue, they haven't blocked you, and everything is fine. Take a deep breath.
If your messages never get beyond that single, sad gray tick, you might have been blocked.
There's a vague chance they still love you, though, surely? Time to keep digging.
Another indicator that your friend hates you is that all those desperate WhatsApp calls you make never go through.
Again, maybe their phone is broken, maybe they've changed their number, etc, etc, but if this one is true and the two signs above it are, too – well, things aren't looking good, are they?
Has their picture or profile changed?
If you notice that a contact hasn’t updated or changed their profile in a while, or they've had the same picture for months, this could mean that they’ve blocked you. Or that they just never update their profile. Maybe everything is fine.
Let's go a step further and check from a different account, meaning from a mutual friend’s smartphone. If you see here that your estranged friend's profile information and picture have changed, then we're sorry to break it you, but your friend has blocked you and, given how strangely you've been acting, with good reason.
How do I mute those annoying WhatsApp group chats?
We've all been here. You've somehow been dragged into a group chat that you either didn't really want to be in in the first place or just don't want to receive notifications from every couple of minutes. Rather than just leave the chat, which may offend some people, you can simply mute the chat so you stop receiving notifications from it.
In WhatsApp, select the "Chats" tab and then tap on the group you want to mute. With the group open, tap the Options icon at the top right. Tap Mute, then select the amount of time you want to mute the group for. You can also untick the Show notifications box so that you never hear from the group again until you decide otherwise.
Some conversations are not for further circulation. WhatsApp helps you along here by allowing you to use a PIN to access the app, so all you will need to do is remember your numbers. Some smartphone manufacturers will offer this feature by default, a good example here is the App Locker on OnePlus models, but if it isn't already in your device you can easily download an app that will do this for you.
How do I hide my "Last Seen", profile picture or current status on WhatsApp?
For one reason or another you may want to hide this information from your contacts. Go to the settings tab "My Account", "Privacy", and you can adjust everything from the next screen. With "Last seen" you can specify who can see your date of last access, with "Profile photo," this is obviously your picture with "Status" you can set who can see your personalized message.
How do I enable the two step verification system on WhatsApp?
This is a great feature as it gives your WhatsApp an added layer of security. Go to settings, My Account > Verification in two stages. You can then choose to receive a verification email when you need to login to WhatsApp, such as when you're using another device.
For anyone wanting to leave WhatsApp, it is possible to delete your account. If you do decide on this option you should know that all of your contacts, message history and other settings will be deleted completely, and you will not be able to restore this data if you end up changing your mind.
If you are accepting of all of this and really, really want to delete WhatsApp, go to "Settings" and then enter the "My Account" tab. You will then find the "Delete my account" option. Confirm your selection by pressing the "Delete my account" tab.
Firstly, don't panic. If your device has been stolen your best option is to remove the number from your network, or at least to block the SIM card. If for whatever reason you aren't able to do any of this - again don't panic, you can deactivate your account via email. That said, this option is not effective if the thief can connect to your WhatsApp account.
Just send an email clearly outlining your situation and a specific request to deactivate your WhatsApp account. Once you send the message, you'll have 30 days notice prior to deactivation. In other words, if you reconnect within 30 days after sending the email, the procedure will be canceled.
Here's the information your email needs to include:
The subject of the email should be "Lost / Stolen: Deactivate my account"
In the body of the email, type "Please deactivate my account. # 33 your-number"
After following these steps, please send email to support@whatsapp.com. If necessary, WhatsApp will contact you for more information concerning your request.
Notifications
How do I get floating notifications on WhatsApp?
You can get floating notifications, or Chat Heads, by using the WhatsBubbles app. Here you will get floating notifications that are similar to those you find on Facebook Messenger. Another application you could consider using is SeeBye Chat Heads, which will also give you floating notifications but you will need root rights to use this app.
How do I completely disable WhatsApp notifications?
Do you have that many contacts that you are receiving a notification every 30 seconds? The simple solution would be to just turn them off. To do this, all you need to do is go to "Settings" and you will find this option either in the notification options or in the application options itself. You can then disable your notifications.
How to turn off the sound on notifications WhatsApp
Getting a little tired of hearing an alert every 10 seconds? Just turn them off! Enter the "Settings" and then in the notifications menu, you can choose whether or not a noise will announce the arrival of any new messages. An alternate method is to simply press and hold on a conversation from the main window, then click the crossed-out speaker at the top right.
How do I respond to WhatsApp messages from pop-ups?
If notifications are not enough, you can configure WhatsApp to open a window in the middle of your screen when you receive a message. You can then quickly respond directly from this window without having to open the entire application.
To enable these pop-ups, enter the "Settings", go to "Notifications" and then select "Popup notification".
If you've ever deleted a photo album by mistake or had your smartphone accidentally wipe everything from your gallery, then you know that particular variety of ''bottomless pit in your gut'' feeling. Never fear, your lost photos are not really lost at all. We'll show you just how easy it is to recover photos on Android. There's only one thing to remember: act fast.
Sponsored: FonePaw Android Data Recovery
FonePaw Android Data Recovery is able to recover deleted photos from your Android device in the blink of an eye. With simple operation of the user-friendly interface, you can recover your lost or deleted photos effortlessly and effectively.
This high-quality photo recovery program works across multiple platforms and devices, including Android phones and tablets from manufacturers like Sony, Google, Huawei, Samsung, Motorola, LG and many more. Restore all of your valuable pictures right now by downloading the FonePaw Android Data Recovery system.
First of all: turn off Wi-Fi and data connections on your phone. The reason to do this is that when data is deleted, whether photos, music or documents, it is not actually deleted until something has been written over it in the device's memory.
All that is initially deleted is the index that points to where the data starts in your memory, so as long as you can find that point again, you can get your deleted pictures back. If that new data gets written over the top of where your lost pictures are, they will be lost forever. A poorly-timed update can be disastrous.
Note: this process requires root privileges on your phone.
1. Download a free program called Dr.Fone for Android by Wondershare (available for Mac or PC) on to your computer. There are other programs available, but we've always had good results with Dr.Fone.
2. Install the program, launch it and register. You'll see the screen below.
3. Connect your smartphone to your computer with a USB cable.
You need to have USB debugging enabled on your smartphone for this process to work. If you don't, simply go to your Settings > About Phone and tap Build Number repeatedly until the notification appears, telling you that Developer Options have been enabled.
Back in your main Settings screen, you'll see Developer Options down near the bottom. Scroll through the settings until you see USB Debugging and check the box beside it. You'll see a notification at the bottom of the Dr.Fone screen saying that USB Debugging is being opened.
For devices running Android Lollipop, you will need to authorize the PC via the prompt that will appear on your phone.
4. Once Dr.Fone for Android has made the connection to your smartphone, you'll be able to select from the following categories of deleted files. We're only after photos, but if you've lost more than that you can tick as many categories as you like.
5. The next step asks you to scan for deleted files or all files. If you're after a quick recovery of your lost pictures to set your mind at rest, take the 'Deleted files' option. You'll need to accept the RSA key prompt on your smartphone (check 'Always accept' to make it easier), making the connection between the two devices secure and, of course, grant Superuser permission when prompted.
6. One this is done, Dr.Fone will analyze your phone and reboot it. If you receive a message on your PC to say your phone has connected again, ignore it; just let Dr.Fone do its thing. Any prompts on your phone that request permissions for Dr.Fone should be granted.
7. Once Dr.Fone has finished analyzing your phone you'll get the scan results screen where you can check the boxes for the photos (or other files, as you can see below, depending which file types you selected earlier) that you want to save, then hit Recover and you're golden.
8. If you've made it this far you've hopefully learned a valuable lesson and will make regular copies of your smartphone photos from now on. Don't worry, we have plenty of tutorials on the site for that too.
How to back up your photos on Android
Now that we've explained how to recover deleted photos on Android, the next step is to prevent this situation from happening again. To do this, we recommend using an app such as Google Photos. This offers unlimited photo storage (so long as the files aren't too large) and the backup function is easy to set up.
Once you've installed the app just go to its Settings, then Backup & sync, and you can choose how often – and by which method – you wish to backup your photos. For a complete guide on how to use Google photos, hit the link.

Transferring your contacts
The most important thing you'll want to transfer to your new device are the contacts. Luckily, the times have changed in respect so you can avoid the painstaking process of doing it by hand. Smartphones make the transfer of contacts easier thanks to cloud synchronization. We’ll tell you how to do it.
Sync your Google account
The easiest way to keep your contacts on all your devices up-to-date is to sync your Google account. If you've previously saved your contacts to your Google account you can just log into it and pick them up on your new smartphone. Just go Settings > Account > Google and toggle the Contacts Sync switch to on. Your contacts will be instantly transferred.
Are you signed in to multiple Google accounts? You can then choose which ones to use in your contacts app. By default, it will only be the one with which you first registered. For any later accounts, you may have to trigger the synchronization manually. In the contacts app of your smartphone, you can set which contacts should be displayed from which accounts.
By the way: if you do not already have a Google account, you can create a new account on your smartphone. You can also do this on the computer and then log on to the smartphone with the appropriate login data.
Syncing through Google has its advantages. On the one hand, it supports more complex business card formats than the data export explained below. On the other hand, you can use the Google account on almost all platforms, including Windows phones, iPhones, and PCs running Windows, Linux or Mac OS.
Transfer contacts from Android to iPhone
After syncing your contacts with your Google account, it’s easy to transfer them to your iPhone or iPad. Just go to the Settings, and there you will find the option to add another account under Mail, Contacts and Calendar. Google is one of the choices. Synchronize your Google account used above, and after a while your Google contacts should be visible in your address book.
In the account overview, your Google account will be displayed as Gmail. Here you can set which parts of the Google account should be transferred to the iPhone. If you only want to transfer contacts from the Android to the iPhone, you can also deactivate the areas for Mail or Calendar.
To view or hide the contacts of individual Google accounts, you can turn the accounts on and off in the address book app. Go to the Contacts tab in the phone app and tap Groups.
Move to iOS
Alternatively, you can also rely on Apple. Apple has released the Move to iOS app in the Play Store. Install this on your Android smartphone and start the app. On your new iPhone (or iPad) you can now start importing the data. Move to iOS transfers contacts, SMS messages, photos and videos, email accounts and calendars. Since the transfer takes place via a specially created WLAN network and is protected by a PIN code, the transmission takes place quickly.
Export contacts over an SD card
If syncing via a Google account is not an option for you, and both your old and new smartphone have an SD card slot, you can transfer your contacts through the memory card. To do this, first export your contact data to the SD card using the old smartphone. The file is then stored in the directory that you see first when you connect your smartphone to the computer.
Then remove the SD card, and insert it into the new device. Now go to your address book and choose from the menu the option to import. Just follow the instructions, and the contacts will be transferred automatically.
The great weakness is evident when you have merged many contacts from different address books, or if the contacts otherwise contain a lot of data. Then, sometimes it can happen that from a single contact, two, three, or more are created; this can be very annoying. To counter that chaos, we have tips for you:
This method works basically the same as the backup on an SD card, but in this case, the contacts are stored in the internal memory of the phone. With this method, you can connect the device to the computer and save the contact file there, and then transfer it via PC to the new smartphone. Tip: note the location that your smartphone indicates when you save the contact file, so you can find it better from the PC. Typically, the .vcf file is located in the System folder.
If you have a file manager on your smartphone, you can also search for the file on the phone and send it from there directly, such as an email or via Bluetooth to the new device.
Via SIM card
If you want to use the same SIM card in your new device as in the old one, you can also transfer the old-fashioned way and copy your contacts to the SIM card so you can restore them in the new device. The advantage of this method is that you can select or deselect the contacts one by one, and work out something equal to your phone book. The main disadvantage is that the memory space on a SIM card is limited; you'll be able to store a maximum of 200 contacts.
Export via SIM card is no longer offered in the phone app for Android 5.0 Lollipop and newer systems. However, importing is still possible without any problems. The following pictures are therefore from an older Android version.
Here too you have the disadvantage that complex contacts with more than just a name and phone number are split up, creating several duplications. This means that even with fewer than 200 contacts, you'll quickly reach the memory limit of the SIM card. You also have the added risk that the old SIM card does not easily fit into the new smartphone.
From iPhone to Android
Data transfer between Apple and Android is not always easy, but there is a simple solution for contacts. Google provides a step by step explanation on its support pages on how to synchronize Gmail, calendar and contacts from the iPhone and iPad. You'll need to set up a Google account on your Apple device, which goes through the app Settings in the Email, Contacts, Calendar area. Since iOS 7 was introduced you can just simply select Google, but for iOS 5 and 6 the path is through Other, and then via Add CardDAV Account.
Set the account and activate the Contacts option after you log in. After that, the synchronization of your contacts starts automatically. On the new Android smartphone, you can then register with the same account information to synchronize and transfer the contacts as described above.
Irrespective of the Google solution, Android smartphone manufacturers have developed apps that transfer contacts from iPhone to Samsung, and other such companies. In some cases they work with a cable connection, some build ad hoc connections between iPhone and Android, while others work with the Cloud system for the specific the smartphone manufacturer.
Sony Xperia Transfer
Sony’s solution to transferring data is called Xperia Transfer. The app helps transfer content and contacts from iOS, BlackBerry, Windows phones, or other Android devices to a new Xperia phone. It transfers contacts, calendar, call log, SMS, MMS, notes, photos, music, videos and documents.
Samsung Switch Mobile
Samsung, the market leader in the Android area, also has an app solution to make a new customer’s switch to a Samsung phone as easy as possible. Samsung’s solution is called SmartSwitch Mobile and is used to switch from an iPhone to a Galaxy, upgrading from an old Galaxy model or switching from another Android smartphone. On Samsung’s support page, the SmartSwitch process is explained in detail. If your old device was a Samsung Galaxy with Android Marshmallow, you can even have the start screen layout transferred to the new device.
HTC Transfer Tool
HTC does not give its transfer app a special name; it is simply called HTC Transfer Tool. Again, the approach is the same as with other manufacturers. The app has to be installed on the old and the new smartphones, but the new phone must be from HTC. Then transfer your email, calendar, messages, contacts and call list, photos and videos, music, background images, documents and settings.
LG
If you have a new LG smartphone, you can either use one of the above-mentioned ways or be content with LG Bridge. The software can offer all that the other manufacturers do with their apps – but a PC or Mac is needed. On LG’s support page you'll find all the information about the LG Bridge you need after you provide them with the model of your smartphone.
The Play Store app LG Backup (Sender) is also recommended. With this you can transfer SMS, contacts, appointments, and call lists from the old to the new smartphone via cable, WLAN or MicroSD card.
SMS Transfer
You can transfer your old SMS to the Android smartphone. The free SMS backup app, SMS Backup & Restore, does exactly that. Your messages are stored in the XML file format and can then be sent directly to the new smartphone via Bluetooth. Alternatively, the backup file can be sent via email or backed up in the cloud and downloaded from there.
The backup app must also be installed on the new Android smartphone. When it is started, it automatically detects the submitted file and restores the SMS messages. Caution: when importing, the app does not pay attention to which SMS already exist. If you import twice, you will have every SMS in duplicate.
The transfer of the SMS from Android to iPhone is not provided. So you can only make a backup of the Android SMS (see above) and read the XML file of SMS Backup & Restore on your computer. So at least you can save the data.
WhatsApp’s complete chat streams can also be transferred to the new smartphone with a little trick, including pictures, videos and sounds. To do this, you must download WhatsApp to the new smartphone and replace the backup folder on the new smartphone with the backup folder of the old device before you start the app for the first time. An extra app or similar third-party tools are not necessary for this. We describe it in a detailed separate article.
Transfer photos
The simplest solution for backing up photos from Android smartphones is to do automatic backups in the cloud. Apps like Dropbox, Google Drive, or Google+ offer automatic synchronization when the smartphone is connected to a wireless device. Thus, the mobile data volume is spared, the upload of the pictures is completely in the background, and pictures can simply be downloaded from the cloud on the new Android device as necessary. The transfer is finished.
If both smartphones have a MicroSD card slot, you can also back up the images on the SD card and restore them to the new device. And, of course, there is also a way via PC: simply connect the smartphone, copy the pictures folder to the PC and move them from there to the new Android smartphone. Mac users must download Android File Transfer for the transfer, otherwise the finder does not display any files.
To transfer photos and videos from an Android to an iPhone, you can also use the app Copy My Data, which leads you step by step through the transfer of old data from Samsung and other Android brands to the iPhone.
Transfer music
Your songs will most likely be MP3 or similar in the music directory. This is one of the folders that will appear on your computer after connecting your smartphone. Mac users should download Android File Transfer to view the files.
It saves these files on the computer and transfers them to the same directory on the new smartphone, or you can create a new directory. No matter what your music folder is called your player should be able to find the songs.
If you want to transfer music to an iPhone, you must transfer the directory with the MP3s to the computer in your iTunes library. Apple’s step-by-step guide will help you transfer your music from the Android to the iPhone.
If you are moving from an iPhone and want to transfer your music from iTunes to your Android, we know a trick:
As soon as you log in to your new Android smartphone with the Google account, it will try to install the apps you previously downloaded from the Play Store. Google’s backup system is used, which unfortunately is only applied to a very small number of apps.
To transfer the app data from one Android to another, you'll need additional backup apps like Titanium or Helium. Only then do you once again have the settings, stored accounts, game stats and so on, and the apps are immediately ready for use.
Many games now use the Google Play Games cloud-saving feature. Then you just install the game on the new smartphone and you can continue in the same place where you left the game on the old phone.
Once all data is transferred, the journey begins with your new Android smartphone. If you need inspiration about the possibilities, we may have just the thing for you.
Unfortunately, apps cannot be transferred from an Android to an iPhone, and there is also no time-saving way to automatically install from the App Store the apps you’ve already purchased from the Play Store. Apple itself advises people to manually reinstall them. Of course, all the purchases you made for apps in the Play Store are no longer transferable to the App Store, so you will have to buy all of the paid-for apps once again.
